3 becomes 4

The day is almost upon us where our family will grow from 3 to 4; we are awaiting the arrival of our 2nd little ‘bundle of joy’.

With a 2 year old in the house already, this pregnancy has felt somewhat different to the first time around. For the most part we have literally not had time to focus on the pregnancy. (This may be just my slightly selfish perspective and my good lady would beg to differ, sorry baby).

There are a few differences for us this time around, firstly that we do not know the sex of baby no.2. This was mainly my choice, which I do slightly regret now, as we have been unable to purchase gender specific clothing (blue or pink? Hmm let’s go for beige it’s neutral). As we have bags and bags of boys clothes, it would certainly be convenient if we had another blue baby this time around. We do both sort of hope that it’s a boy, and not just for the ease of clothing the little mite; we really would like to see Logan have a little brother and them both playing happily together, he says hopefully.

Having done this before you would think that we were experts and we know exactly what to expect over the next few days, weeks and months. On the contrary, I feel like I know absolutely nothing about the birth and the baby stage. You see, this time there are no NHS classes and no NCT classes for us to meet like minded people that are going through the same things as us. During the first pregnancy we were learning new things every week and studying the babies growth on websites and iPhone apps. This time around we have no ‘network’ and less involvement with the professionals in general. However, again this may just be my own slightly selfish perspective on the situation, and Sara has it all in hand and enough knowledge to get us both through the whole messy ordeal.

With a toddler in the house already, we have got a lot of the paraphernalia we will need for the new baby. We have bottles, bowls and bibs galore. We also have a lot of the larger kit we will need such as cot, bouncers and mats. This new baby is going to get used to reusing stuff, the old hand me down syndrome will be in full effect for junior-junior. We even had lengthy discussions about reusing one of the possible names we had lined up for Logan, although we’ve decided against that. A friend did actually say we might as well reuse the name, just to get the kid used to hand me downs right from the start, hmm I’m not so sure about that one.

The other factor we need to consider is how our toddler will act towards the new baby. Will he kick it, kiss it or completely ignore it? I imagine it will be a combination of these things, as it will take time for him to get used to the new arrival. At the moment we’re slowly introducing baby stuff into our living space. See the picture below for how well this is going:

With only one day until the official due date, it’s all becoming a bit real – we’re gonna have another screaming little person in our house in the next 1-2 weeks. I’m very excited about it, and also quite nervous (for more insight into my nerves please read my time to talk post, which is an insight into my health and well being).

Bring on the crying….from the baby too !!!
